Globalization has broken geographical and national boundaries between countries.
Our world is 31 ,
and we are living in a global village.
32 more and more frequency, people travel around, and they find it

Since English is the most widely used language, it will 33 become a world language. 34 some studies, a large

When it was published i
When it was published in 1973, E.F. Schumacher’s book,
Small Is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered, made a lot of people think about the ways we make money, and what we use it for. Here is a quote taken from the book:
“A modern economist is used to measuring the ‘standard of living’ by the amount of annual consumption,
assuming all the time that a man who consumes more is ‘better off’ than a man who consumes less.
A Buddhist economist would consider this approach excessively irrational: since consumption is merely a means to human
well-being, the aim should be to obtain the maximum of well-being with the minimum of consumption. ...
The less toil there is, the more time and strength is left for artistic creativity. Modern economics, on the other hand,
considers consumption to be the sole end and purpose of all economic activity.”
The quote makes sense to a lot of people who are tired of always working harder to buy things that don’t
really make them feel a lot better.
What do people really want, and what do they really need? Suppose someone
decides that a bigger or better television would make life more enjoyable. Perhaps. But what does the person have to pay for that TV?
It’s not just the money; it’s the lost hours spent earning that money.
In any case, a family decides to buy a big television for the living room. But then the parents decide that they want a second television for their bedroom. What happens?
They all can’t watch both televisions at the same time.
Perhaps one person in the family watches the one in the bedroom,
while someone else watches the one in the living room. But then they are missing out on the happiness of being together as a family.
There are lots of things we do that don’t really improve our lives.
【3】 41. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
To suggest some good ways to make more money and use it.
To explain the relationship between consumption and economics.
To inform the reader about the real significance of well-being.
To discuss why a family decides to buy another television set.
【1】 42. Which of the following statements about Schumacher’s book is NOT true?
Consumption is the only way to get a sense of well-being to a Buddhist economist.
It is usually believed that the more money a person spends every year, the wealthier he / she is.
A Buddhist economist is more concerned about spiritual well-being than material satisfaction.
Modern economists hold that the standard of living is closely related to annual consumption.
【4】 43. A Buddhist economist feels that the approach of a modern economist is _______________.
sensible
applicable
pragmatic
unreasonable
【3】 44. According to this article, what may a Buddhist economist encourage people to do?
To work harder in order to buy a bigger and better TV set.
To devote more time and strength to boost the global economy.
To spend more time and energy in artistic activities.
To live up to what most modern economists have stated.
【2】 45. According to the author of the passage, buying more than one TV _______________.
is necessary for a family to enjoy more happy hours
may lose the opportunity of sharing happy time with family members
is helpful for avoiding any possible fight about watching TV
is an unavoidable trend for most modern families

In 1983, Cyndi Lauper reached
In 1983, Cyndi Lauper reached the top of the charts with her hit song ”Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” These
days, the same could be said for millions of men and women in their 20s, 30s, and even 40s. These so-called
“kidults” dress and behave like children. Refusing to grow up, they often live with their parents, play video
games, and watch cartoons. Observers point to positive and negative ramifications of the trend, which is all
about having fun and avoiding, at all costs, the “R” word: Responsibility.
The word “kidult” is a combination of “kid” and “adult.” Kidults often live with their parents long after
finishing high school and college. It’s a fast-growing trend. In 1970, only 11% of American 26-year-olds lived
with their parents, but by 2005, that figure had grown to 20%. Likewise, people are getting married and having
children later. In Ireland, for instance, the average marriage age rose from 30.7 in 2000 to 32.6 in 2005.
Facts like these have led some observers to suggest that people are growing up later and later. Rather than finding
a steady job, getting married, and taking out a mortgage, many people are opting for a different path. They’re staying
put, taking whatever work comes along, and devoting their disposable income to having a good time.
Though we can’t stop time, the maturation process does seem to be slowing down. As daily life becomes more complex,
it’s taking people longer to learn to live independently,
so the traditional idea that adulthood starts
at 18 may soon be a thing of the past. That holds true for countries as diverse as Japan, Germany, and Canada. So,
to all those adults with Hello Kitty T-shirts and toy robots, take heart.
You’ve got plenty of company.
【1】46. What is the main idea of the passage?
Many adults still live a lifestyle associated with childhood.
Companies have found numerous ways to market to kidults.
More and more adult Americans are living with their peers.
Nobody wants to accept responsibility or work hard.
3【4】47. What does the word “ramifications” in paragraph 1 mean?
implications relationships consequences interactions
4【3】 48. Why are people taking longer to grow up?
Parents don’t want their children to move out.
Daily life is full of impossible challenges.
Traditions are changing in very few countries.
The world is becoming more complicated.
【1】49. Which of the following statements about kidults is NOT true?
They are working hard to buy their own homes.
They are not pressured to get married as soon as possible.

I lived and worked in the Far East
I lived and worked in the Far East for thirteen years.
In my view, the Japanese are doing exactly what we’ve asked them to do
—selling us high-quality goods at reasonable prices.
The Japanese succeed because they work hard.
They are well educated. They are committed to quality.
And their government does not burden the productive economy with unreasonable regulations and misguided tax policies.
I’m sure it is tempting to bash Japan in an election year,
but America is starting to behave like the crybaby of the Western world.
Not to be outdone.
Some Japanese politicians decided to retaliate.
American workers are lazy and unproductive,
they said. Such comments are totally unrealistic.
American workers—at least those I know in the petroleum industry—
are as good as any workers in the world.
Remember, it was Americans who put out the hundreds of oil-well fires in war-torn Kuwait.
And we did it more quickly and efficiently than anyone dreamed possible.

My high school was one of
My high school was one of the best in the country.
The average score for my class on the Scholastic Aptitude Test was 615 out of 800 on the verbal part and 675 on the math part.
This compares to only 419 and 473 nationally.
Last year, 51% of my class was National Merit Scholars.
This is unheard of at any other school.
Take one of our classes for example,
we sat on the floor or lay on couches while we worked,
if we felt like it. We could talk whenever we wanted to.
We didn’t need permission to go to the bathroom or to leave the classroom for any other reason.
I’m not sure I ever saw my teacher give a lecture.
He was always busy ( racing around the classroom offering comments) and answering questions.
And we chose what we wanted to learn. If something interesting turned up while we were doing a project,
we could investigate it further. Considering all these qualities of my American history classes,
I’d say it was the progressive type, one that Darling-Hammond would admire.
46. How many parts of the Scholastic Aptitude Test are mentioned in the article?
Two. Three. Four. Five.
47. How many points higher than the national average did the author’s high school class score on the verbal part of
the Scholastic Aptitude Test?
51 185 196 298
48. According to the article, who decided where the students sat in the class?
Ministry of Education.
The school.
The teacher.
The students.
49. When the students wanted to leave the classroom in the American history class, what should they do?
Give a good reason.
Just leave.
Report to the teacher.
Wait till the bell rings.
50. What did the teacher of American history do in class?
Answering questions.
Fooling around.
Giving a lecture.
Quieting the class down.

Oanh was in my computer
Oanh was in my computer class last semester,
but she didn’t look like a student at all.
She often wore t-shirts to school that had words on them such as “Love me” and “Kiss me,”
and she used a lot of cosmetics.
She colored her fingernails with violet fingernail polish.
When she walked in the classroom, every student could smell her perfume.
Her hair stuck out and was dyed with different colors every week.
I thought I didn’t have anything in common with her, but I was wrong.
I found out she was Vietnamese one night in the computer lab.
First, we talked about class and homework, and I watched her try to debug a program.
Then I began to talk to her about more personal subjects.
The more I talked to her, the more I admired her. Oanh’s mother had abandoned the family,
and Oanh’s father had become sad and useless. Oanh took care of her whole family.
Although her appearance was like a Vietnamese punk rocker,
Oanh was a strong and responsible person.
I have learned not to judge others from their appearance.
I hope that in the future I can convince Oanh to give up her rock and roll hairstyle.
【1】46. What is the relationship between Oanh and the writer?
They are classmates. They are neighbors. They are roommates. They are relatives.
